For two years I have listened to the students beg for a football unit, but I’ve been so intimidated because it’s a sport I’ve never played and I’ve been worried about how aggressive they might be. This year I’m listening, I got safer balls, and I used the USA Flag Football elementary curriculum to build a great unit. What I realized is this: it’s not about me, it’s about them. It’s about learning new skills and about developing a love for being active, no matter what the sport. What a joy it is to see kids LOVING football and really desiring to understand more. 🏈 #trynewthings #flagfootball #physed #physicaleducation
What challenges did you face and how did you overcome them?
For two years I have listened to the students beg for a football unit but I’ve been so intimidated because it’s a sport I’ve never played and I’ve been worried about how aggressive they might be. This year I listened. I got safer balls, and I used the USA Flag Football elementary curriculum to build a great unit.
How do you plan to make this Play last during the school year and beyond?
Students learned how to work together, they learned all the skills (throwing, catching, dodging and defense) and all the positions. We have laid the groundwork for years of great football at our school.
What improvements have you seen at your school?
I have seen an overall positive view of football, from those who love it and from those who were insecure. I have also seen a new excitement for watching football as a fan.
