University of Iowa football players came to SEJH to play football and basketball with junior high students during their advisory time. They hung out, had fun, and developed relationships with junior high students, influencing them to eat right and stay active. Students have to obtain a privilege pass to participate by keeping their grades at passing and behaving well in class.

How did students and adults work together as a team?

Students and athletes chose a game to play together. The U of I athletes hung out, participated, and encouraged physical activity with the students. FUTP 60 members coordinated this as well as the teachers at SEJH. It was a huge success and highlight for students. Many decided to continue on into spring with this opportunity.

What challenges did you face and how did you overcome them?

Our first challenge was to get the athletes to our school when we have free time for the students. They decided to come during our advisory time, when students were available.

How do you plan to make this Play last during the school year and beyond?

Athletes will continue every week on Wednesday for a half hour through May.
