Community Playtime – It’s Good for Everyone

University of Iowa athletes show up weekly to join in a physical activity for South East Junior High students to support students, be good role models, and encourage them towards healthy eating and consistent exercise habits. Students in FUTP 60 attend and other students from SEJH who qualify for a Privilege Pass may attend. We have had up to 50 students at one time join in the fun.

How do you plan to make this Play last during the school year and beyond?

This is our 2nd year doing this with U of I athletes. We plan to continue as long as they are willing to volunteer. It has been very popular with the students and they love the interaction.

How did students and adults work together as a team?

Our students worked with the adults in the building to get this set up. Students have to earn a privilege pass by having good grades and behavior in class to be qualified to attend.

How did you accomplish your goals?

We accomplished our goals by keeping this going another year and allowing students to interact with their heroes at the college level. These athletes encourage exercise and fun along with eating with a healthy mind-set. They are faithful to come and our kids are thrilled with this opportunity unique to our community.
