Students took a field trip to Houston's Farmers Market to learn about agriculture and getting fresh foods from farmers. Students tasted fresh fruits and veggies and talked to farmers about their produce while learning how they farm and grow it. We purchased local fresh produce to prepare and sample at school and many students purchased produce to take home. This was an eye-opening experience to see first hand how produce is brought to market that is vine ripe. Most students have never been to a Farmers Market. They could taste the difference between fresh picked produce versus produce that is picked early and shipped across the country to local grocery stores. Student Ambassadors shared information about local farmers and the importance of supporting them.
How do you plan to make this Play last during the school year and beyond?
Students are introduced to local farmers produce as well as fresh produce at local grocery stores. We discuss the importance of eating fresh produce as part of their daily food intake. Students will learn to prepare snacks and sides using fresh fruits and veggies, make fresh dairy rich smoothies using dairy and fruits, and taste a variety of different veggies and fruits. Students learn best with hands-on experience and this will help them to continue to make healthy choices.
