Our KSHAC introduced the Harlandale Middle School to Walk Across Texas last year (2016-2017) and the entire school was involved. Our principal had everyone walking in the hallways and on the field out back at 10:00 am on Oct 20, 2016 for 10 minutes while music blared on the intercom. We had a great time with kids enjoying the social aspect while others helped push some students on wheelchairs out on the field. We had over 900 students and staff involved. It was such a success that Principal Marroquin asked if we would do it again this year. Our KSHAC was so excited to sponsor this event. So we held our 2nd Annual Walk Across HMS in October, 2017.
How did students and adults work together as a team?
Students and staff worked really well together. While walking, there were conversations going on among the adults and students. It was great to see everyone enjoying themselves.
How did you accomplish your goals?
We had upstairs classrooms walking in one direction down the hallway and coming back on the opposite side coming back. Same thing with the downstairs classrooms. Classes in the Science building walked out side on the field with the Physical Education classes. Everything was in place and staff and students followed it without a hitch.
How do you plan to make this Play last during the school year and beyond?
We plan to make this a yearly thing in hopes that the school and the community can come together and incorporate walking into their daily schedule in order to promote Health and Wellness .
