Each month we hold a walk to school event. All students are welcome to the event. The event takes place before school. The students meet at a designated spot before school. We hand out incentives to the participants and we usually dress in a costume that corresponds with the month (Leprechauns in March). The school administrators walk with us as well. As we ramp up the event we promote on the morning announcements.

How do you plan to make this Play last during the school year and beyond?

We plan to make this event last by holding the event once a month throughout the school year. Students and families know the first Wednesday of every month is walk to school day. The designated meeting spot is always the same as well.

What challenges did you face and how did you overcome them?

Challenges we faced were inclement weather at times or really cold. However, we toughed it out and bundled up. Some events had fewer students if it rained. We tried to encourage the students to dress appropriately.

What improvements have you seen at your school?

Improvements we saw were more kids being active by walking to school. More activity means a shorter car drop off line. But, even more important more active students means better learners at school.
