Walk to School Wednesdays

October 7, 2015, was International Walk to School Day. We extended the celebration so that it lasted for three weeks. Each of the first three Wednesdays in October the PE teachers met students at neighborhood parks and walked to school with the students and their parents. This was a great way to practice street safety lessons and get in a little exercise before school started.

How did students and adults work together as a team?

Teachers taught a street safety lesson to all students. Students made annoucements about Walk to School Wednesdays. Our students are encouraged to take responsibility for making healthy choices. Students met at the park and walked to school with us.

How did you accomplish your goals?

Our goal was to provide our students with an opportunity to practice street safety and to realize the benefits of walking to school. We have three different neighborhoods that feed into our school. We walked to school from each of the neighborhoods.

What challenges did you face and how did you overcome them?

We have two PE teachers at our school. We worried that too many students would join in the walk and we wouldn't have enough adults to keep an eye on the students. To combat this problem, we encouraged families to join us on the walk. It worked!
