Walking Club - Stay Active When it's Cold Outside
Students in grades 6 and 7 at Hoosac Valley Middle School participate in a Walking Club during their outdoor recess time. The weather here in western MA is cold this time of year. Now on Tuesdays and Thursdays, students can come into the gym and walk during their outdoor recess time. Music is playing and they are enjoying the time walking and talking with their friends. Snow is prohibiting students from going off the blacktop and with 200 students, the space is cramped. Walking is a great form of exercise to get their hearts beating. When students attend four Walking Club sessions, they will earn a plastic foot bead and a chain to put them on.

How did you accomplish your goals?

I had the help of my FUTP 60 Ambassadors and teachers to promote the club. I also hung flyers in the hallways. I invited teachers to participate too.

How do you plan to make this Play last during the school year and beyond?

I plan on making this play last by having incentives for the students to walk. I give students a plastic footbead when they attend 4 sessions. I hope to do more in the future.

What challenges did you face and how did you overcome them?

One challenge I faced is when the students who play basketball at recess everyday thought no one would come. I am trying to reach the students who do not play basketball and just stand there doing nothing.
