Walking for a Healthy Life

Simmons Middle School started a 100 Mile Club when school started in the fall. Students are able to walk before school in the gymnasium every morning. The students record their miles after they are finished walking. There is a group of boys that are regular walkers. They also get the cones out to mark out the walking area and put them away when the bell rings to start Homeroom. They are dedicated to leading a healthy lifestyle and are excellent examples for our other students. Other students have joined in the walk. This group of particular boys had walked over 60 miles by the 1st quarter break. They will surpass the 100 miles.

How did you accomplish your goals?

The Walking Club is going strong. The boys that are the regular walkers are able to get other students to walk throughout the week. They have set a great example of being responsible for their own health.

How did students and adults work together as a team?

We have a supervisor in the gymnasium in the morning. The students put out the cones and record their miles. The supervisor is encouraging to the students. The School Wellness Committee has been involved by choosing a walker bi-weekly.

How do you plan to make this Play last during the school year and beyond?

Students are allowed to walk every morning before school. They will be allowed to walk the entire school year before school.
