Walking for Success at LaGrange

Breakfast For Everyone — First Meal Matters
Our Play at the La Grange Middle is starting a walking program. My PE classes walk two or three times a week. We belong to the Rising New York Road Runners. I am able to turn in their laps walking and any other physical activities toward earning prizes. They have other incentives that my students can earn as well. Several of my students have won a pair of new tennis shoes in a drawing. Also, in March, we walk and do several physical activities to earn points for books. Walking encourages my students to remain healthy by staying active. Walking is something they can do without costing anything. We also talk about eating healthy while being active.

How do you plan to make this Play last during the school year and beyond?

We will walk at least 2 to 3 times weekly. At times, they will be asked to walk at home, encouraging someone in their family to walk with them. Walking is a lifelong activity.

What challenges did you face and how did you overcome them?

At first, the students just want to walk slowly. I will let them walk with listening to music, or telling them how many laps they have to compete.

How did students and adults work together as a team?

Some days, I will give them a number of laps they have to compete before they can do another activity. The students will br encouraged to do some running so they finish quicker.
