Here at Lake Hazel Elementary, our Healthy eating play is "Waste Less and Enjoy - It's good for all of us." Instead of wasting food and milk, we are using our "sharing cart" to help make a difference in our students and our school. Students that choose not to drink milk, or eat pre-packaged food or fresh fruits and vegetables, can place these items on the sharing cart at breakfast or lunch. If there are students that are still hungry, they may take items off the cart, so that the food is enjoyed and not wasted. The students have started to realize a lot of food and milk was being wasted and that this is better for all of us. This program has been very successful and our students have loved helping others that need a little extra snack. We think that in time, it will show itself as a value to those students who don't normally get enough fuel to make it through the afternoon, as they will be able to refuel for their late-day academics.
