We can all play together!

I am a teacher at a residential treatment facility. We teach grades 1st to 8th in four multi-grade classrooms of all boys. I currently have a small class size of five boys, ranging from 1st to 3rd grade. These boys have had struggles in their lives due to abuse, neglect, and personal behavioral and emotional issues. It is often a struggle to have the boys play together safely without issues. With Fuel Up to Play 60, I have been able to encourage the boys to play together during recess and other breaks during the day, to encourage activity and better their personal peer relationships. This program has made a positive impact on the students at Pine Haven Boys Center.

What improvements have you seen at your school?

The students are working as a team and playing together well. Since Fuel Up to Play 60 has been introduced and encouraged in the school, the students look forward to playing together daily.

How did you accomplish your goals?

Planning activities and tasks keep the students moving. My prize box in the classroom used to contain small candies and now I still have sugar-free candy, but also have small toys such as balls and cars.

How do you plan to make this Play last during the school year and beyond?

Our hope is that their positive relationships last after the program is completed and beyond. Many students are placed for a number of years, so building the positive, strong relationships help them in all areas of their lives.
