Access to Healthy Foods, Community Involvement, Teamwork
This is our first year having a school garden and we are absolutely thrilled to be a part of the 4-H program! This exciting free after-school program includes activities such as: science of gardening and school gardens, writing in student garden journals and blogging, fresh vegetable tastings and demonstrations, preparation and participation in 4-H food contests, physical activity lessons and challenges, 4-H youth enrollment and opportunity to hold a club office, service learning project and family nights. The program is led by Ms. Ramos, the 4-H coordinator with Texas A&M Agrilife extension and Mrs. Culver, Health /Technology teacher at Hearne. Together we hope to make a difference in our students' and parents' lives and bring health and wellness to Hearne Elementary.
What challenges did you face and how did you overcome them?
The challenge we have faced so far is getting more student and parent involvement. We have around 10 students but the class is meant for up to 35 students. It is a brand new program at our school, so our hope is with time, it will grow into the magnificent program that it can be!
