Physical Activity Participation

We are in a fairly inactive community. Getting students and their families to desire more physical activity has been a challenge. This year, our main Physical Activity Play was Ramp Up for Recess. We spent our funding buying equipment for our recess time. We got students and a local college group to volunteer time to add a 4-square court and repaint the outdoor basketball court. We also added tetherball, bocce ball courts, and freetime equipment. Our students have been hosting grade-level tetherball championships. It is wonderful to watch and see!!

How do you plan to make this Play last during the school year and beyond?

We have developed a way for students and adults to play together. Tetherball is such a silly game that no one is really "good" at it. Everyone loves it.

What challenges did you face and how did you overcome them?

Students are very irresponsible with the equipment we have purchased. We are trying to come up with a check-out system.

What improvements have you seen at your school?

Student relationships are improving because they are playing together.
