This year we began a before school running/walking club at Lee Elementary School. Every Friday at 7:30 AM 35 students and 4 teachers meet in the gym for a 45 minute running club. Students are given logs each week to fill out at home with their families to keep track of the number of minutes they are active each week. At the beginning of the club each week, they fill out their mileage log and convert their minutes to miles earning one mile for every 20 minutes of activity! After that, they begin running, jogging or walking laps around the gym to music! If weather permits they are allowed to go outside as well. After 25 minutes of running, all students gather in the middle of the gym for group exercise before ending the time with a running game. Students that attend get to start their school day having gotten some great exercise and fun with their friends before the school day begins! At various times throughout the year we also like to reward the students with smoothies. We allow them to pick the fruits that we put in and have them help make them.  The recipes are sent home to families so that they can make them at home too! We have blenders that we obtained through a Fuel Up to Play 60 grant a few years ago and they still work great! We have found so many great benefits to having this before school club!

How do you plan to make this Play last during the school year and beyond?

This club is completely free of charge to students, as well as to the school district. The teachers that come before school do so for free, 2 of them being the physical education teachers. Due to the success of the program, it has already been advertised for next school year and will continue as long as there is student interest. Because it is free of charge for all, it makes it easy to continue!
