Working Together for Better Living

Fuel Up to Play 60 has provided our campus with the resources and guidance to accomplish some really good things in just a short time. When I first came to this campus last year, I noticed a lack of student involvement in our campus wellness initiatives. By getting involved with this initiative and forming our K-SHAC (Kids School Health Advisory Council), we have been able to start a trend of healthier living and better nutritional choices on our campus. We recently held a Kickoff event where a local and former NFL player, David Vela, came to speak to our kids and interact with them in football activities. Since then we have participated in our district National Night Out event and have worked with our PTA to help sell healthier snacks after school. We also have students who provide daily health and wellness suggestions through our morning announcements.

How did students and adults work together as a team?

Students suggested and now sell carrot sticks, apple slices, and bottled water with our PTA every day after school.

How did you accomplish your goals?

Once we had commitment from our district PE folk, our campus administration, and our kids, everything else has not only fallen into place, but is up and running faster than expected.

What improvements have you seen at your school?

I have already noticed more positive talk on campus among students, teachers, and parents about the changes in culture and the choices being provided to the kids.
